About Us
Nigeria’s democratic journey, now spanning over two decades of unbroken civilian governance since 1999, remains a work of profound promise and persistent challenge. Electoral malpractice, institutional fragility, human rights deficits, and a crisis of ethical leadership continue to threaten the gains of Africa’s most populous democracy. In this context, there is an urgent need for institutions that do more than observe—institutions that actively protect democratic gains, defend human rights, and develop a new generation of leaders committed to integrity and public service
The Humphrey N. Nwosu Center for Democracy and Human Rights is conceived to meet this need. The Center will institutionalize the extraordinary legacy of Professor Humphrey N. Nwosu (1941–2024)—a distinguished scholar of political science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC, 1989–1993)—the man who conducted the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history. The Center will serve as a hub for rigorous research, professional training, civic education, human rights advocacy, leadership development, and policy innovation, anchoring its work through a strategic academic partnership with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)—Prof. Nwosu’s alma mater—and pursuing collaborations with leading international organizations including the United Nations, the Kennedy Center, and other global institutions dedicated to democracy, governance, and human rights.
